New Teen Zone!

Maplewood Library’s new TEEN ZONE is opening at the Main Library on Sept. 6. Although the area is still “under construction”, the young adult collection of fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and books on CD have been moved to what used to be the Adult Reference Area.
TEEN ZONE provides a place for tweens/teens to read a book or magazine, do homework, research a school project or play a game! Check it out!

Family Lego Night has been a fun and successful program that offers families an opportunity to work together to build Lego creations, which are on display in the Children's Room.

146 children (plus their parents) signed up to be a part of the Family Lego Night programs this summer.

Rangoli for Adults

Rangoli is a very creative craft for both men and women. Rangolis are floor designs from India and are made using a grid system. It is the kind of workshop in which you really do not need drawing skills!

Seema Moodra, of Enjoy Explore India, will bring a display of rangolis, give a demonstration on how rangolis are made, bring some sample designs, and help each participant complete their project.

Rangolis are particular to different regions of India and the display will help you learn about the geography, the culture of the country and understand how these geometric patterns have traveled throughout the world.

It is a simple yet dynamic cultural learning workshop and the skill you learn can be used to continue designing at home.

Free and open to all adults 18 and over.

Novel Destinations

Adult Summer Reading Program

This summer, adults will have their own reading program at Maplewood Library. Novel Destinations is open to adults 18 and older, with programs, give-aways, book discussions, and prizes.
Registration begins Monday, June 27. When you register, you‘ll receive a bookmark and reading log.
Every adult who turns in a completed reading log by Friday, August 12 will receive a Novel Destinations browsing bag and will be entered into a grand prize raffle drawing.
Programs do not require registration, and are free of charge.

State Library Recognizes Hilton Library Best Practice

The Read Together Backpacks at Hilton Library have won a $500 prize for a Best Practice in Early Literacy from the New Jersey State Library. Four libraries in the state were awarded this prize.

Hilton Library has about 25 of the child-sized backpacks filled with materials…books, manipulatives, CDs, puzzles, and other items to encourage parents to be part of their children’s introduction to reading.

The check was presented to Jennifer Burkholder, Hilton’s children’s librarian, at the State Librarian’s breakfast during the New Jersey Library Association Conference in Long Branch on May 4.

Jennifer will also be part of a panel presentation on May 10 in Atlantic City for The NJ Head Start Association Conference. She will describe and demonstrate how the Read Together Backpacks help parents and caregivers encourage language and pre-reading skills in children from birth-6 years.

Hilton Library is also featured in a Best Practices booklet that the State Library will distribute at both the NJLA and NJ Head Start Conferences.

Have a Blind Date Tonight

Single? In a relationship? “It’s complicated”? No matter! During the entire month of February, you can head to Maplewood Main Library and have a mysterious assignation. Or as many as you like. If you’re up for a rendezvous, all you have to do is check out one of the books on display. They are all wrapped in brown paper, and you won’t know the identity of your blind date until you get it home. Will it be fiction or non-fiction? Funny, informative, entertaining, or heart-breaking? Spend some time getting to know your date. There will be no uncomfortable questions to answer, no awkward lulls in the conversation, no need to put on nice shoes (or even get out of your pajamas). Sure, you might be disappointed; but then again.... you may end up having a great time with something you would otherwise never have ventured to read.

Inside each book pocket is a ‘Rate Your Blind Date’ slip: if you’re so inclined, you can say whatever you want about it.

Even if your date turns out to be a dud, (don’t worry; its feelings won’t be hurt), all is not lost! With each slip you return, you can enter a raffle. One lucky Blind Dater will win dinner for two at St. James’s Gate. Stop by Main Library between February 1 and 28. You might get lucky; if not in love then perhaps in literature.

Maplewood resident Andrew Wasden, a 7th grade homeschooled student, read a total of 800 minutes in a month to raise money for a community project. His plan was to use the Reach for the Stars program to donate a favorite series to the Hilton Branch Library. Through sponsors who pledged a certain amount for each minute read, Andrew was able to donate 6 books in the Conspiracty 365 series to the library. In Praise of Picture Books

You may have seen the article on the front page of the October 8th New York Times: “Picture Books No Longer a Staple for Children.” Based on information from booksellers and publishers, the article reports that the sale and use of picture books are declining. It paints a grim picture for the future of picture books.

We disagree. The picture book is alive and well at the Maplewood Library. Over 25,000 picture books have been checked out since January. Picture book nonfiction is also in high demand, with over 13,000 items circulated this year. Patrons carry out arm loads of these illustrated treasures every day. Our New Picture Book section is one of the hot spots in the library. Parents complain if we don’t maintain a good supply and variety of picture books.

Library Storytimes – where picture books are prominently featured – are at maximum capacity. We see kids snuggling with a parent to read a picture book, rather than using the computer. Older children, as well, respond with interest and excitement to picture books. Stories rule! And illustrated stories are in big demand for all ages.

The Times article credits the decline to the economy, the high cost of children’s hardcover books, and parental pressure for children to read above their age level. We do see these trends, but the public library has become the antidote to escalating book costs and a strained economy, as well as a place to escape from TV.

Public libraries are the community voice for the future of books and reading. We embrace the idea of universal reading via e-Books and interactive stories for children. We subscribe to TumbleBooks Online stories so that kids can enjoy their beloved picture books in new and exciting ways. But, despite all the wonderful new technologies, there still is no substitute for the sit-on-your-lap-and-read-with-a-parent picture book. We think picture books have a long and vibrant future. And the community of readers that calls itself Maplewood seems to agree.

Fun With Science

A dozen young scientists cheered as red foamy lava oozed out of their volcanoes covering cars, animals, and lakes. Hilton Branch's "Hands-on Science" workshops encourage kids ages 7 - 10 to roll up their sleeves and make a science-y mess. In this case, the mess was a mixture of dirt and glue wrapped around a small soda bottle to create the volcano. On and around the volcano, the scientists added glitter, matchbox cars, animals made out of clay, and "lakes" made from bottle caps filled with blue glue. A shout rang out when the vinegar reacted to the baking soda and everything in its path was destroyed.

The Hands on Science series continues with Owl Pellets on November 9th and
Test Tube Adventures on December 14th. Both are from 3:45 -to 5 pm.

The Maplewood Library Grassroots Fundraising Committee is sponsoring ‘Show Your Card, Show Your Support’. From October 17 to 23 when you show your MML card (or mention the promotion) participating Maplewood restaurants will donate a percent of your pre-tax dining bill to Maplewood Library.

Other restaurants will have a can for cash donations for you to give what you like (and some will even match all donations collected!)

All donations from this promotion will be used for adult and children’s programming and collections.

Betsy Wald conducted her "Snow in July" hands-on science program at Hilton Branch Library. The program was part of the Summer Reading Club.

This hands-on science series for kids ages 6 - 9 is in three parts. July 29th is 'Volcanoes and Tornadoes' and August 5th is 'Water Jelly Crystals'. At this time, the classes are full with waiting lists, but we hope to continue hands-on science workshops in the Fall.

State Budget Restores Monies
Thank you for signing orange postcards, reaching out to local officials and generally advocating for the library. Your efforts paid off! The 2011 State budget restores $4.3 million to Library Network Services, so we'll be able to continue offering interlibrary loan and delivery and retain internet access. A Make a Stand lemonade fundraiser for the Maplewood Memorial Library took place last week at the Maplewood train station. Communters enjoyed lemonade and cookies and helped support the library.

The library will remain open during this time, but it is inevitable there will noise disruptions and disturbances. Stones into Schools by Greg Mortneson

"Mortenson’s best-seller, Three Cups of Tea (2009), introduced his commitment to peace through education and became a book-club phenomenon. He now continues the story of how the Central Asia Institute (CAI) built schools in northern Afghanistan. Descriptions of the harsh geography and more than one near-death experience impress readers as new faces join Mortenson’s loyal “Dirty Dozen” as they carefully plot a course of school-building through the Badakshan province and Wakhan corridor. Mortenson also shares his friendships with U.S. military personnel, including Admiral Mike Mullen, and the warm reception his work has found among the officer corps. The careful line CAI threads between former mujahideen commanders, ex-Taliban and village elders, and the American soldiers stationed in their midst is poetic in its political complexity and compassionate consideration. Using schools not bombs to promote peace is a goal that even the most hard-hearted can admire, but to blandly call this book inspiring would be dismissive of all the hard work that has gone into the mission in Afghanistan as well as the efforts to fund it. Mortenson writes of nothing less than saving the future, and his adventure is light years beyond most attempts. Mortenson did not reach the summit of K2, but oh, the heights he has achieved."

And did you know that library programs have been flat funded for the last 20 years? Plus, Assemblyman John DiMaio has introduced Proposition A2555 to eliminate the minimum local funding requirement for municipal libraries. This local library funding -- less than 3% of local property taxes, may force libraries throughout NJ to close their doors for good.
